Millionaire Detective Reveals Daisuke's Reason for Joining Modern Crimes

Daisuke joined Modern Crimes to solve a mystery that happened long ago — and he's so close to cracking the case.

The latest episode begins with a flashback to when Chosuke was still at the investigation headquarters. Solving the death of Sayuri Kambe wasn't simple back then, with the politics of the detective department creating obstacles for them, not to mention the Kambe family seemingly trying to hide a key suspect in the case. But t's not simple now, either, even with the addition of Daisuke's technology, because it seems that the same forces back then are still doing their very best to keep the truth behind Sayuri's death under wraps.

Sayuri Kambe Is Daisuke's...

19 years ago, Chosuke and Takei worked together in the investigation headquarters and were quite friendly, with Chosuke jokingly complimenting his partner's "strategic move" in marrying the director's daughter. Suddenly, the two of them get a call and rush over to their latest crime scene. At the location, the picture is grim. Underneath the covering is a young woman's corpse, the floor awash with her blood: Sayuri Kambe, 34, who died with a single stab to the heart. Her house appears to be ransacked but the two detectives and Director Kiyomizu are convinced that this isn't a simple robbery gone wrong.

Their investigation reveals that Shigemaru Kambe, the head of the family and husband of Sayuri, is a researcher currently looking into a dangerous material called "allodium," which is represented with an omega-like symbol. Chosuke and Takei head to the Kambe mansion to ask Kikuko if they can speak to Shigemaru, though she says he's still overseas for work. Takei asks whether Sayuri and her husband are separated, since it turns out that, two months prior, she rented the house she was found in. Kikuko remains tight-lipped. When they fail to get Shigemaru's photo from Kikuko, Chosuke fakes a stomach ache and steals a photo album.

Bureaucratic Pressure

Inviting him to his office, Director Saiki instructs Kiyomizu to watch Chosuke and keep him informed. He warns him to look at the bigger picture instead of chasing justice. Right at that moment, Takei comes in to deliver a report on Shigemaru and the director swiftly changes tack, telling his son-in-law to be kind to his daughter.

During a late night, Chosuke realizes that there's a key taped to the back of a family picture with Shigemaru, Sayuri and a young Daisuke. It appears to be the key to a coin-operated locker marked "D15," with the symbol for allodium. Chosuke is about to call Kiyomizu, but he's stopped by Takei, saying they should wait until they get more information. Kiyomizu warns them not to get in too deep.

The Second Kambe Death

Some time passes and Chosuke receives a call that Shigemaru had committed suicide, just as they got a new lead on what the key might open. What's worse is that someone has stolen the key. Suddenly, everything comes to a grinding halt; with Shigemaru dead, the investigation will have to close and the headquarters dissolved.

As what has become a regular tradition, Chosuke and Takei sit at a bench in the park and eat watermelon ice cream with Chosuke spitting out the chocolate seeds. Takei gets promoted to the First Division and Chosuke gets demoted. Before he leaves, the older detective hands Takei an envelope for his newborn, telling him to become a father that he can be proud of.

Takei's Memories

Daisuke's appearance 19 years later gave Chosuke hope that Sayuri's case could finally be solved, turning him into an advocate for the cause. So much so that He and Haru bust through the Kambe residence gates when Daisuke doesn't come to work. It turns out that he's trying to figure out what actually happened leading up to Imura's death, as the surveillance footage was tampered with. Haru confronts him once more and asks him what he's after, knowing that there must be a reason why he's doing illegal things like tampering with Imura's car. Instead of ignoring him, Daisuke admits he came to Modern Crimes to figure out what really happened to his mother.

As soon as Takei's car starts, gas pours in through the vents and he loses consciousness. In a weird dream state, he's thrown into various flashbacks, where it's clear that Takei knows more than he's letting on. At the same park he was at with Chosuke, Imura materializes in front of him, accusing him of killing her. She admits that she knew it would come to this, but tells him he needs to report to "him." Takei's about to call, but he sees Haru and Chosuke approaching and he wakes up.

It turns out Takei was in a virtual world that Suzue and Daisuke had created to coax the truth out of his memories. From the phone call, Daisuke figures out was trying to contact the late Director Saiki. Completely ashamed, Takei tries to deny Chosuke's remarks that he did all of this because of his ambition. Haru turns to look at Daisuke, who watches Takei break down with an unreadable expression on his face.

From the photos, it seems that Sayuri and Shigemaru were involved in allodium research, which cost them their lives. It's unclear whether Saiki is the one orchestrating all of this or if he's answering to someone else. With Haru and Chosuke now working together with Daisuke, they may finally get to the bottom of what happened 19 years ago.
