My Hero Academia's Eijiro Kirishima is one of the best developed characters among the colorful and quirky students of Class 1-A. He's known as the social butterfly of his class, as well as for his obsession with "manliness". Beneath his confident persona is a sweet and nervous kid who was determined to reinvent himself upon his entrance into UA High School. The story behind the night his Quirk first developed perfectly embodies this contrast between his seemingly hardened exterior and the uncertain guy underneath it.

Quirks in the My Hero Academia universe typically develop during childhood around the age of four. Sometimes this moment is traumatic, as with Eri who accidentally rewound her father out of existence, and sometimes it's a cause for celebration like with Katsuki Bakugo. For Kirishima.

Boku no hero academia

Kohei Horikoshi, the mangaka behind My Hero Academia, revealed in a bonus character profile page on Kirishima that he unexpectedly developed his Quirk late one night. Little Kirishima was sleeping in bed, and when he woke in the middle of the night to pee, didn't even notice anything had changed. It was only when he sleepily rubbed his eyes and accidentally cut his face that he realized he had a Quirk. Kirishima's Quirk, Hardening, gives him the ability to harden any part of his body, so his baby face couldn't handle it when tried to rub his eyes with a sharp, super-toughened hand.

To this day Kirishima still bears a tiny scar from the incident over his right eye. It's probably the most innocent origin story possible for a scar on a guy that punches out villains while shirtless, especially when he's in the same class as another student with a scarred face and story to go along with it -- Shoto Todoroki. The two students couldn't be more different, and it's a nice reminder of how distinctive Horikoshi makes each character when it comes to both their designs and their personalities.

While Kirishima isn't yet the gruff and ultramasculine hero he aspires to become, his inability to easily reach that ideal makes him more relatable than most heroes with durability related superpowers, no matter whether we're talking My Hero Academia, Marvel or DC. His humble Quirk origin story is another facet of Kirishima that grounds him as an ordinary guy with extraordinary ambitions.

Kirishima will going so far with his quirk.
